F.A.Q.
What is the meaning behind Payola Collective?
This really is a two part question. Number one, why payola? Number two, Why Collective? Let’s start with number one. Why Payola? what meaning is there in that beautiful word? What is the second, third and fourth meaning in those three syllables? The honest truth is there is no special meaning. The first time I heard the word payola was while I was listening to a NPR interview with Connor Oberst and he was crying about how unfair everything is. He wailed on about Payola in the radio industry. When I heard the word I immediately loved it and began designing under that name shortly after. It was way better than my first designing name, “U.S.A Number 1 designer.” That was many years ago and i still love that name.
Number two, why collective? I don’t have a specialty. I love designing, I love making films, I love writing, I love culture. I wanted a website where I could showcase all of my passions. So, on Monday I feel like designing a t-shirt, I’ll do it. On tuesday I feel like writing a satirical paper about age discrimination in fixed gear bicycling. The rest of the week I’m editing a short film about nothing in particular. The website is a collection of the cream of the crop of my creative life, Hence the Payola Collective.
2. Can you design something for me?
Yes I can. Here’s the catch though; this is a business. I don’t do pro bono. There is one exception, If you were raised by my mom (and I think I know all of them) then I work for free. Otherwise, if you have an idea and a few bucks hit me up.
3. You look familiar. were you in Green Day?
No, I wasn’t. I’ve never gotten this question but I would hate to be mistaken for one of the guys in Green Day so I thought I better nip this one in the bud.
4. You look familiar. Were you in Maroon 5?
Please refer to question 3.
5. Why are there only 4 questions in the F.A.Q.?
I’m not that popular. and people don’t ask me that many questions. Are you happy now that you humiliated me on the internet? Good.
