Arcade Fire Interview on NPR

I am blessed to be surrounded by very creative people that point me in the direction of greatness. Back in 2004 my wife told me to listen to this station out of Seattle called KEXP while I worked in my office in Idaho. KEXP was in New York City to cover the CMJ Music Marathon and were doing a series of small, live concerts from a museum in Brooklyn. I found their website and began to listen to their live stream of the shows. In that same morning I discovered two of my favorite artists that to this day are still in heavy rotation on my ipod. The first was Sufjan Stevens who’s music is my 20′s in a lot of ways. The second band I heard was The Arcade Fire. I remember calling my wife and saying, “this is amazing! I cant believe I’ve never heard of these guys before!” Since then I have been a committed Arcade Fire fan. Later that year my wife and I drove to Seattle to see them perform live; that show has remained one of the best experiences I’ve ever had at a concert. For their encore they came out on stage with acoustic instruments and played a while then proceeded to walk down through the packed audience, out into the Foyer of the Paramount, all the while playing and singing as loud as possible. Once they reached the Foyer they set up on the stairs and played for 15 minutes with the audience singing along.

That’s what I love about Arcade Fire; they are true entertainers and are passionate about providing the best sound and concert experience possible. Today they recorded an interview with NPR about their latest album and even played a couple of tracks from it. From listening to the two songs I can say that it is distinctly Arcade Fire while also distinctly not something you would find on either their first LP, “Funeral,” or their second, “Neon Bible.” I am excited to see them on the road in the fall and will be in line in August to purchase “The Suburbs.”

Titus Andronicus: A More Perfect Union

I just love this video. The band is named after Shakespeare’s first known play about a general named Titus Andronicus who is caught in a cycle of revenge. Their first album titled “the Airing of our greviences,” take of course from Seinfeld, is angst filled and heavily distorted shoegaze that seems slightly more rough than their latest offering. The first track is an amazing kick in the butt that goes perfect with weaving between cars on your bike. They also interlace classic literature references and readings throughout both albums which give them more of a propaganda feel.

The second album is called “the monitor” and is a little more polished, but just a little. I love this band for their fury and love of history. They play like they are the last standing fortress of their beliefs, or maybe they are the first. Or maybe they aren’t saying anything serious at all. Whichever it is, it sounds amazing.

I decided to start doing more weekly topics. This will be the first one. I sit at my desk everyday for hours a day and a few months ago I discovered Lala.com. you can listen to any bands full album once and then decide whether to buy it or not. its awesome. Active child doesn’t have a full album on their yet but he is releasing a full albums worth of music piece by piece. the song wilderness is a cross between Bon Iver and Beach house. I can’t wait to hear a full album.

Luke Dowler, “Never Changes”

You know how you have those friends in school who you hang out with everyday and you know you will be friends with the rest of your life but as soon as you take your diploma you never hear from them again? Then there are those friends you have a brief encounter but for whatever reason you continuously reconnect with? Luke is the latter. He moved to Kalispell the summer before our senior year and we were inseparable. My brothers and Luke and I would spend every waking moment skateboarding (him on a longboard), listening to ska (I know), and Weezer’s Pinkerton album. Life was good and school was right around the corner. Then my family moved two hours away to Libby, Montana. When people ask me about Luke I say he was a high school friend without really considering that we spent all of two months in the same city and actually never went to high school together.

We have stayed in contact over the years and have talked about collaborating since we were teenagers. But for whatever reasons we have never been able to make it happen until now.

Today Luke is a prolific Musician on the verge of national recognition. His music is honest and raw. He asked me if I would want to make a music video for his latest album titled, “Compared to you.” I was thrilled to help out.

The idea for the video is one I have been working on for two or three years. I actually filmed a similar version for a short on a skateboarder in Orange County but it never felt right. Luke wanted to know if I had any ideas for a video and I told him about this one I had been working on for a number of years. In the conversation he gave me the missing pieces that finally made the story line click.

The homeless character is played by Mike, who runs a halfway house in Coeur d’Alene. This was his first acting gig and I think he is a natural. The young mom was played by Camille Coast, another natural. and the baby is my nephew Owen.

The whole project was a labor of love for the whole crew. I thank all of the volunteers on this project. It was a blessing to see it all come together.

Josh Montieth and Chuck Schmidt were my amazing crew and helped me out in so many ways.

Street Scene 08

Posted in music on September 22, 2008 by jordanhalland
For my brides birthday this year we went to Street scene.  It is a small scale music festival in San Diego.  I say small because compared to the next nearest festival, Cochella, it’s a cute little gathering in downtown SD.  But the lineup is anything but small scale.  We decided to attend the Saturday event and saw some amazing bands.  The beauty of the festival was that most of the bands we saw were groups we had been trying to see for years but their shows sell out within minutes.  So paying the 75 dollars per ticket to see a handful of bands that if we tried to see individually would cost us hundreds of dollars made sense. I picked a few photos to show you how we spent our weekend at Street Scene.
THE NATIONAL: Their set was amazing and the ohchestral elements of their live show almost out-do their last album.  As big as the sound was they played to the croud and it felt like a small club show.
The national
the nationalGHOSTLAND OBSERVATORY: In my opinion the best show of the night.  They are a electronic duo from Austin, Texas.  Two natural performers doing what they love.  Their music is worth experiencing live.  If they play within 5,000 miles of your house drop everything you are doing, quit your job and pay whatever exorbitant fee they are charging for their show.  Ghostland will not disappoint.

TOKYO POLICE CLUB: Another amazing show.  They are just kids!  Their albums sound like the project of a overly medicated troupe of trust fund grad students but their live show revealed a youth and exuberance that was the missing piece.  I rediscovered why I listened to their first ep nonstop when it came out.

COLD WAR KIDS: There are bands that I like and then there are bands that I love.  Cold war kids is one that I love.  Unfortunately everyone loves them which makes getting tickets nearly impossible.  They did an amazing set and from what they played of their new album I cant wait to hear Loyalty to Loyalty, which drops tomorrow.

THERE WAS A PARTY IN MY TUMMY!: We scoured the grounds of Street scene for food that was not a sausage.  This little pizza stand tucked into a forgotten corner was selling these beautiful vegetarian pizza’s. My wife and I each bought this blackberry, garlic, spinich in white sauce masterpiece.  I have never had so many complete strangers ask me where I got my pizza before.  One guy even took a picture of it.  Well worth the five bucks!
